City of London School Common Room

Education

As part of a wider strategic masterplan for City of London School for Boys, we have developed a series of internal and external design interventions that set out a clear, phased approach to transforming key student-facing spaces across the estate. The project redefines how pupils, staff, and visitors experience the school - from arrival, through circulation, to social and shared spaces - ensuring the environment reflects the quality, ambition, and values of CLS.

As part of the City of London School for Boys masterplan, these proposals establish a coherent design framework for a phased programme of improvements, focused on enhancing the student experience while strengthening the school’s competitive position among leading independent schools.

The proposals extend into social and shared spaces such as the Sixth Form Common Room, transforming them into flexible, contemporary environments that better support wellbeing, independence, and changing patterns of use. The existing layout was rationalised to unlock underused space, acoustics and lighting are improved, and durable, sustainable materials are introduced to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance.

The result is a cohesive, future-facing environment that celebrates CLS’s heritage while supporting academic excellence, student wellbeing, and long-term adaptability - ensuring the school continues to lead by example in both education and the quality of its built environment.
